Just because the holidays are among us, does not mean you should be restricted to listening to the same loop of songs, like Mariah Carey’s All I Want For Christmas Is You or Last Christmas by Wham! As the year comes to end, it is time to reflect on the best music of 2017, as well as open your ears for new releases.

 

Future: FUTURE & HNBRXX

Future released two albums back to back in February. Both of his albums were number one on the Billboard Top 200 chart. Future is the only artist in music history to drop back to back number one albums. His music style is considered hip-hop, however, he uses auto-tune as a tool in his songs to accentuate his music. He has also been nominated for many awards this year, such as Top Male Artist, Top Rap Artist, Top Rap Tour for the Billboard Music Awards. Mask Off was his most popular song this year off of the FUTURE album, and it was nominated for Best Editing in the MTV Video Music Awards.

Migos: Culture

Culture debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200 and topped the R&B/Hip-Hop Albums charts. The trio is composed of three rappers, known as Quavo, Offset, and Takeoff. They named their album after the culture of hip-hop music. Slippery ft. Gucci Mane was their most popular song on this album.

Thundercat: Drunk

This fusion of R&B and electronic climbed the charts, with many famous collaborations. Stephen Bruner, better known as Thundercat, worked with Kendrick Lamar and shaped the sound of his album To Pimp A Butterfly. He came from a family of musicians and draws inspiration from jazz musicians, which help him to use elements of old soul, funk, and jazz in his music. The most popular song on his album was Them Changes.

Spoon: Hot Thoughts

This album was the group’s 9th full-length release. The indie-rock band formed in the nineties, and there have been many former members replaced throughout the years. Lead singer Britt Daniel said that they wanted to have a lot of different vocals on the record. The band’s top song of this album was Hot Thoughts.

Khalid: American Teen

This singer debuted his first album, while barely out of high school. He originally got a career boost when Kylie Jenner played his song Location in a snapchat video. This up and coming artist’s lyrics are about everything he went through in high school: all the clichés about love and heartbreak. He won VMAs best new artist. Even though all songs were wildly popular, his best was Silence.

Drake: More Life

Drake refers to this album as ‘a playlist’, and was the artist’s seventh consecutive number one album. Passionfruit was the top song of this album.

Kendrick Lamar: DAMN.

Damn was Kendrick’s fourth studio album, and it received widespread critical acclaim. The album received three Grammy nominations and is the Billboard year-end number one album of 2017. HUMBLE. was the top song on the album.

Mac Demarco: This Old Dog

Singer-songwriter Mac Demarco moved from his home in Queens to LA to create his third full-length album. This year he really grew his fan base, while still staying true to his chill vibe. His most popular song on this album was Still Beating. 

Harry Styles: Harry Styles

For his solo debut, Harry’s first self-titled album was a complete success. Coming from former group One Direction, his fan base that carried over was in for completely new soft rock sound from the artist. Even One Direction critics could not help but respect the singer’s album. Kiwi was his most popular song off the album.

Dua Lipa: Dua Lipa

Dua Lipa’s debut album was full of pop hits. Her lyrics revolve around her views on love, rising above, and self-empowerment. Her album has sold 1.2 million copies worldwide. New rules was her most popular song.

SZA: ctrl

Ctrl is singer-songwriter SZA’s debut album. The album and the songs on it were nominated for four grammys, and SZA was nominated as Best New Artist. Her most popular song on the album was Love Galore.

Vince Staples: Big Fish Theory

Hip-hop album Big Fish Theory was Vince Staples second studio album. His lyrics touch on politics, suicide, racism, and success and fame. Vince wanted the album to have a Detroit Techno aesthetic. Big Fish was the most popular song on the album.

The War On Drugs: A Deeper Understanding

A Deeper Understanding has been nominated for one Grammy, Best Rock Album. Lead singer of The War on Drugs, Adam Granduciel is often compared to Bruce Springsteen. Their most popular song on this album was Pain.

Lil Uzi Vert: Luv Is 2 Rage

Luv Is 2 Rage is rapper Lil Uzi Vert’s debut studio album. The album is a sequel to his commercial mixtape, Luv Is Rage. His most popular song on this album was XO Tour Llif3.
